Mrs. Fowler's assignments

Hope you enjoy your weekend. Please remember to pray for one another as we head into November and the holidays.

Parents,
Please treat this Stalin book very carefully. It is true to history, but that can be hard sometimes. I would like you to read this book with your son/daughter as much as possible. That way you and I both can explain facts as we move through it. Stalin was cruel and brutal. This book depicts that. Please let me know if you have any concerns.

7th/8th History: Map work on the European countries map.
Read pages 1-41 of Stalin, Russia's Man of Steel.
You will have a reading quiz in class.

Literature: Quiz on Up from Slavery.
We will begin a short story by Amrose Bierce.
I will supply the text.

5th/6th History: We finished reading Chapter 8 in class today.
We also talked about the importance of the railroad in the history of the
country.
Write a one paragraph description for each section of Chapter 8 of SOW.
( That means you will write two paragraphs in all)

More Candy needed!!!
We packed the bags for reverse trick-or-treating, but we were short some candy. If you could donate some wrapped candy, please send it to school on Friday. We will be taking the bags to a local housing project to share with the children.
Thank you to those who brought candy today and to those who stayed and stuffed the bags.


7th/8th History: Gettysburg Address needs to be memorized by Friday. (3rd paragraph)
Read handout for Transcontinental Railroad and complete game on the third page.
Research the everyday life of a young person in 1890. ( food, activities, school)

Literature: Finish Up from Slavery.
The audio on Booker T. Washington is at history matters.com.
Share it with your family if you get a chance.
5th/6th History: Read the handout for the Transcontinental
Railroad. Complete the game on the 3rd page.
Read pages 82-86 in SOW.

7th/8th History: Research and bring your written notes to class on the following subjects:

If you did not have a political cartoon today, you are responsible for
bringing a different one (not shared today) on Tuesday. They must be
Thomas Nast.
Literature: Read pages 77-116 in UFS.

5th/6th History: We had a great time playing a card game called "Changing Rules: in class.
It was suppose to teach us all how hard it must have been for the French as
they lived under one kingdom, 3 republics and two empires.
The game was hard to play, so we did learn a little.
Please review Chapter 7 of SOW and make 6 test questions for the review on
France and six for the review on Prussia.

Gettysburg Address . ( Oct. 30th)
Please find and study a Thomas Nast political cartoon on the Reconstruction.
Research and come ready to discuss the following on Reconstruction:
1. Lincoln's proposal
2. Congressional Schemes
3. Johnson's efforts

Literature: Read Pages 26-76 of UFS.

5th/6th History: Finish reading Chapter 7 of SOW. ( We read the first part in class.)
Complete worksheet about the provinces of Canada.
Complete map for 1900 Europe. ( You should have the blank map )

We tried our hands at political cartoons today. Some of them were
pretty funny. Please write summaries for both sections of Chapter 6
of SOW. The summaries should be two paragraphs, so get an early
start!

Thank you to the Miller family for the wonderful presentation on the Battle of Gettysburg. We are thankful to have a historian in our midst. The students all reported how much they learned. Please take the time to ask your son/daughter about it.

7th/8th History: We will try to finish and review main points on Friday. You will receive a study sheet and a take home test to be completed over the weekend.
Please plot the following on your map and bring your map to class:

Mrs. Fowler's assignments

I don't know about the rest of of you, but I'm not sure we have had any event at Trinity so honoring to the Lord. The Jones family did a great job with the spirituals and the explanations.
I hope you all learned something. I know I did. Thanks for all of you who participated.
Our prayers are with each of you who has been sick. Please stay in touch!

Literature: Finish reading Red Badge of Courage.
Review all the vocabulary on former blogs. ( you will not have a quiz on Tuesday)
Test will be on Friday, October 16th.

7th/8th History: Make cards of the following battles:
June 1864 The Siege of Petersburg
August 1864 Sherman's Atlanta Campaign
November 1864 Sherman's March to the Sea
Sept.-Nov 1864 Sherman in Atlanta
December 1864 Sherman at the Sea
Jeffrey and Jackson will share about Gettysburg on Tuesday.
No memory work until after the test! I decided to wait until
it would mean more to you. That means a reprieve for Gettysburg Address.

5th/6th History: Review Chapter 5 of SOW.
We will review in class and test on Friday.

Mrs. Fowler's assignments

I can't believe another Friday has passed. The days seem to be whirling by. I am thankful to each who was prepared for class today. It makes my job easy when you are ready to learn.

7th/8th History: History was so nice today. The projects looked and sounded great.
Please remember that the Jones family will be with us on Tuesday. They will be talking about the spiritual life on the plantations and the ministry though music. They are going to share through music many of the Spirituals written during the time period. I think you will all love it.
****Please review you cards everyday in preparation for the test.
**** Make cards for following events in 1863:
March 1863 The First Conscription Act
March 1863 The Battle of Chancellorsville
May 1863 The Vicksburg Campaign
June - July 1863 The Gettysburg Campaign
November - December 1863 The Siege of Knoxville
**** Please plot each battle on your map.
On October 13 in class: Jeffrey and Jackson Miller will teach the Gettysburg Campaign.

Literature: Nice job on your discussion in class. Read Chapters 18-22 of Red Badge of Courage.

5th/6th History: We had a great day walking to the Secession House and sketching the house. I learned about each of you as artists!
Please do research with your parents on the following topics. Write one paragraph for each.
1. The Leadership of Robert E. Lee before and during the Civil War
2. Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War
3. The Battle of Gettysburg
4. The surrender of Lee
